As (most of) the UK has been basking in the heat of the unseasonably warm weather, Public Health England have issued warnings regarding the possible health effects of elevated temperatures.

For most, a common sense approach such as keeping hydrated is adequate to ensure they do not encounter any problems whilst enjoying the hottest September for decades. Some people, however, are more at risk of succumbing to the ill-health effects of the heat, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Those at risk are young children, elderly people and those with existing health conditions.

Tips to stay cool

The following are some recommendations for dealing with the heat:

  • try to keep out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (11:00-15:00)
  • keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • wear sunscreen, a hat and keep to the shade when outside
  • close curtains or blinds on windows facing the sun
  • wear clothing appropriate to the weather, usually loose, light garments made from natural fabrics.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and stay safe!
