Due to the COVID-19 related difficulties experienced by many in trying to renew First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work certificates, The Health and Safety Executive and announced that extensions were permitted.

Permitted extensions

Initially for 6 months, the latest announcement stated that certificates that expired after 16th March 2020 could remain valid until 31st October 2020 or 6 months from the date of expiry, whichever was later.

All requalification training must be completed by 31st March 2021 and the HSE have made clear that no further extensions are planned.

Additionally, in order to qualify for the extension, employers must be able to demonstrate that they have made every effort to arrange requalification training, have adequate first aid arrangements in place and ensure a level of cover which is appropriate for the work environment. Full details of what is required are listed on the HSE’s First aid during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic page.
